World Athletics Championships - Budapest

A week if athletics started today.
UK Medal prospects...
We have the fastest man on the planet Zharnel Hughes who this season broke the longstanding UK 100m & 200m records. Looks nailed on for a medal, should be gold.
Keely Hodgkinson is fastest at 800m this year and UK record holder, and will be looking to improve on her silver medals in the Olympics and last World Championships.
Dina Asher Smith is allegedly injury free and back to form so a possible medalist.
Laura Muir though not had the best season is a championship performer.
Katrina Johnson-Thompson is coming back to form.
We're always good for relay medals.
Usually a surprise or two such as
Jake Wightman's gold (currently injured) in the1500 at the last World Championships.

Thought the British lad ran brilliantly to hold off the Jamaican 400m champion to take bronze in the 4x400.

400m hurdlers are perfect for the 4x400 as they do the most horrible single race there is.

Couple of good relays at the end, 2 bronzes, good stuff.
The Dutch bird did well, what a finish.

A bronze in both the 4 x 400m relays for the GB men and women, but what a last leg from Femke Bol to win the Gold for Netherlands in the women’s race. She started quite a way behind but timed her run to perfection.

Agree about MHS - he went for the win and only narrowly lost. It was a brave tactic that almost worked. He will obviously be gutted to get the silver though.
Ingebrigsten will definitely get it right soon. He has time to work on his speed, his tactics, his ensurance, his kick. I find it interesting that his double-threshold training style is beginning to become popular over here though as one of the new training fads. not sure I even understand how it can work so well for 1500m or even 5000m running.
I don't get the infatuation with Dina Asher-Smith either. She broke through with that 200m Gold in 2019 but hasn't really done much since - and she's always got an excuse. I feel sorry for her in a way as the media big her up so much as a medal hope but not entirely convinced that she is any more?
Hughes will be disappointed but leaves with a 100m Bronze so still a decent games for him coming home with a medal.

It's because sprinting is what they love and focus on. They have a program where the money goes.
Same with Reggae, so much great music from such a small source.

200m bit of let down esp Hughes in 4th.
Asher Smith nowhere in the womens, beaten by Neita who finished 5th.

I am pleased for MHS, from the gun he went for the win. He achieved a silver by trying to win not by running defensively and wishing he had tried harder earlier.
I much prefer the MHS approach to the Moyes philosophy.

Ingebrigtsen is clearly a very talented athlete - and has the potential to destroy most fields.
But he has had it too easy with pacemakers and cherry-picked grand prix meetings (where he has juggled different events). He seems to misjudge things in slower and more physical races.
But, as somebody said below, he's 22 years-old and still learning. At some point he's going to get it very right.
Should make for a great 1,500m event next year, providing all the Brits, Kenyans and Ethiopians are also fit.

The 1500 men’s race in Paris next year is already a prospect to relish. Ingebritson now knows for sure that if a fast finisher is on his shoulder with 200m to go the chances are he will be run out of the gold medal.
The. Norwegion knows that from gun to tape, on a really fast pace, he can burn most everyone off so his best chance in Paris will be by not biding his time at all and really going for it from the off.

The Olynmpics are going to be great next year and I've no doubt Ingebrigsten will be better. We forget that he is still only 22 and he will have a point to prove. His weakness is clear and he's got plenty of time to work on it.
I really hope however that we have some entrants in the mens 5000, 10000 and Marathon as the qualifying times are rapid. We do have some decent youngsters coming through and some quick guys like Emile Cairess, Mark Scott and Sam Atkin who will look to qualify, but there aren't many runners around who have been able to run the qualifying times.

Great run by Josh Kerr, that. Like Wightman last year, it was a proper competitive run - a few bumps and shoves in the pack at times - and he got his tactics spot on.
Ingebrigtsen is clearly very talented, but still a bit of a flat-track bully - always runs well when there are pacemakers and a few gullible duds in grand prix races. Currently the Greame Hick of athletics.
The Norwegian needs to learn to win untidy, in yer face, races before next year's Olympics. I hope he doesn't.
In stark contrast, Karsten Warholm is a beast. That was some run last night, against that field. Made it look easy, and he was racing the next two fastest men ever.

A mile is quite a bit further than 1500m. The WR for the mile is 3m43s. 3.30 would be a bit loony and I don't think we will ever see it.

That race got me salivating at the thought of next year's Olympics, can't bloody wait.
Out your seat moment, though was obvious on the last bend he had the legs on him. Brilliant stuff.
Seems mental that 70 years ago Roger breaking the 4 minute mile was deemed mental and now they go below 3.30!!!
Bit like the 100 where back when I was growing up, sub 10 seconds was rare as fuck and now you look at them like they're proper shit if they don't manage it.

Ingebrigsten won the 5000m last year after his silver setback in the 1500m. I am probably going to get this wrong as I predicted him to comfortably win the 1500m but I think the 5000m race will not go his way either as it's such a strong field.
Expect this will be dominated by the africans.
Cheptegei will be going for the 10000 / 5000 double and showed he's in good shape despite having not run a 5000m yet this year.
And there are at least 2 each from Ethiopa and Kenya who will be there or there abouts.
Mo Katir of Spain could possibly be the quickest of the Europeans the way he is running.
Either way, heats will be interesting today and might give us some indication, but the final could be one hell of a race.
